Introduction

As your business operations grow, so does the complexity of your Web deployment. Many enterprises deploy additional servers and infrastructure at a single point. This is risky because if the site loses connectivity, it will be inaccessible to end users. Furthermore, users accessing the site from distant locations may experience variable delays. The centralized architecture is not encouraged for international companies that must serve localized content to users in different parts of the world.

Webvisions' GeoAware DNS solution overcomes these problems by distributing Web traffic for a single website among a collection of web servers deployed in multiple geographic locations. By serving content from several different points in the Internet topology, Webvisions' GeoAware DNS solution softens the impact of network bandwidth bottlenecks. Users are directed to the nearest server site at the time of the request. This will be especially important for mission-critical business operations. Webvisions' GeoAware DNS solution provides a cost effective yet effective Web traffic management solution suitable for medium/large enterprises.

How it works

With multiple websites/servers at different geographic locations, a GeoAware DNS Server handles DNS queries for a domain, returning for each query an IP address of one of the sites/server. For each query, the GeoAware DNS Server selects the nearest Web server, based on the geographic location of the client. The system then resolves the geographic location of IP addresses at the country level.

  • A web user will contact the ISP's DNS server when accessing a web site for the first time.
  • The ISP DNS server then contacts Webvisions' GeoAware DNS server and requests a DNS lookup.
  • Webvisions' GeoAware DNS server then selects the nearest web server to handle the user's request.
  • The IP address of this web server is then returned to the ISP DNS server.
  • The web user is then able to surf this web server.
