Server Connectivity
Server connectivity is very important in today's Internet environment. However, with rising bandwidth costs, there is a tendency to over-sell or
squeeze too many users on available existing bandwidth.
In Singapore, for example, it is not uncommon to find many web hosting providers stuffing all their customers onto leased circuits at varying sizes of up to T1 speeds. This "tinned sardines" situation is probably understandable; it is caused by the high cost of leased circuits in Singapore.
Server Location
Webvisions overcomes the above problem for its Singapore servers by (1) ensuring each server we put up
has a separate 100mbit *direct* connection to Singapore's Internet backbone within
the data center of a major Singapore ISP, (2) each server is connected at 100mbps directly to an ether-switch
. Doing this allows us to pay for bandwidth as needed on a per server basis, but costs scale up as we add more servers.
This also eliminates the bottlenecks caused by leased lines, improves network redundancy and optimises
download speeds. And most importantly, there is no opportunity to over-sell our bandwidth.
Redundant Network Architecture and Multi-Homed Connectivity
In addition, Webvisions' network principle of n+1 redundancy ensures that the Webvisions Internet Data Center has multiple carrier neutral, reundant connections to the Internet.
True Virtual Server
Webvisions' virtual servers provide true flexibility and robustness.
For example, our Virtual Mail Server provides you the ability to create
unique pop usernames for each pop account. In most virtual hosting scenarios, providers
provide you with pop usernames that are unique only to the machine you are hosted on.
So, if another virtual server already uses a particular pop username for a
pop account, you cannot use the same. But, what's the big deal you say. The
key word here is convenience. Especially in a corporate environment, you do not want to confuse your
end users. Therefore, an email address sales@xxxx.com would have the pop user
name sales, instead of sales@xxxx.com
or sales-08 etc.
Unique IP address per Virtual Server
Virtual hosting, or sharing multiple domains on a single IP address, is a low-cost method of offsetting the costs of getting a unique IP address for each domain attached to every server. But there are three disadvantages:
- Shared IP hosting is not supported on older browsers (Netscape 2/MSIE 2 and below).
- In this environment, resources are shared among all the domains on the single IP.
e.g. internet traffic is compounded across the same IP address
for every site that is sharing it. This will slow you down tremendously after a large number of domains are registered to this IP address.
- Shared IP hosting cannot provide a true Virtual Server environment.
The upside to shared IP hosting of course is low cost. Our hosting packages
all come with a unique IP address each, and provide the ability to host multiple domains shared onto your Virtual Server.
Many providers, however, still sell shared IP hosting for as much as $15 to $39 monthly,
with the claim that they are selling virtual servers.
This situation results in overpriced packages that offer poor features
(see our standard packages that
all come with unique IPs, even Singapore packages).
How can you tell if you are on shared IP hosting ? The best way is to pull out a list of customers hosting with your current provider and
do a "ping" against a few of them:

domains on each server. You can control and manage mail accounts, ftp
logins, email aliases, cgi-bins for each virtually hosted domain!
